What Chicago crews handle

What's different in Chicago?

Chicago basements are deep and usually finished - and much of Cook County drains through combined sewers that back up into them during heavy rain. Freeze-thaw cycles burst pipes in uninsulated exterior walls, ice dams push meltwater under roofs, and a dead sump or ejector pit turns an ordinary storm into a flooded basement in an hour.

In the Chicago area the coverage that surprises homeowners most is sewer backup - it's only covered with a water/sewer backup endorsement, an add-on many policies skip despite the combined sewer system. Check your declarations page before the next heavy rain.

Your call goes to a crew based in the Chicago area. Serving Chicago, Evanston, Cicero, Oak Park, Skokie, Berwyn, and all of Cook County.

What to know before repairs in Chicago

Illinois's Mold Remediation Registration Act, amended effective January 1, 2025, directs IDPH to register mold remediators who show a third-party certification and proof of financial responsibility. IDPH says those rules are still pending: a proposed rule was published October 17, 2025, and until rules are adopted, remediators are not required to register. So there is no state registry to check yet. The Act also exempts home builders and remodelers working under the written warranty on homes of four or fewer units. What you can ask for now: for home repair work over $1,000, state law requires a written contract with the total cost and the business name and address, plus the 'Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights' pamphlet. Mold health and technical questions go to IDPH at dph.tox@illinois.gov. Fraud complaints go to the Illinois Attorney General.

Common questions

Should I test first or go straight to removal?

If mold is visible and the moisture source is obvious, go straight to remediation. Test first when mold is hidden, symptoms don't match what you can see, or you need documentation for a claim.

Is mold really that dangerous?

It's a health concern worth taking seriously - especially for kids, older adults, and anyone with asthma or allergies. Removal ends the exposure either way.

Is mold remediation covered by insurance?

Mold remediation may be covered when the mold resulted from a covered sudden water loss, often up to a separate limit. Coverage depends on the cause and your policy's mold exclusions, endorsements and limits. A covered water loss does not automatically establish coverage for mold remediation. Check your declarations page for any mold limit.
