Why scrubbing it makes it worse
Disturbing mold without containment sends spores through the house - and bleach on drywall kills the surface while the colony keeps growing behind it. Proper remediation seals the area first, removes affected material, and HEPA-cleans the air.
Mold is always a moisture problem wearing a costume. The crew finds and fixes the water source. Mold can return if the underlying moisture problem remains.
Local to St. Louis City & County
St. Louis takes water from every direction - river flooding on the big years, flash-flooding downpours in between, and a brick housing stock whose century-old supply lines fail on their own schedule. Humid summers grow mold fast in wet basements, and spring severe-weather season adds roof and tornado damage to the mix.
Missouri policies cover sudden failures and storm openings; river or street water needs flood insurance, and sewer backup - common when downpours overwhelm older lines - needs its own endorsement. Wind and hail are standard perils, sometimes with their own deductible.

Black mold questions
Is black mold really that dangerous?
It's a health concern worth taking seriously - especially for kids, older adults, and anyone with asthma or allergies. Testing tells you what you're dealing with; removal ends the exposure either way.
Is mold removal covered by insurance?
Mold removal may be covered when the mold resulted from a covered sudden water loss, often up to a separate limit. Coverage depends on the cause and your policy's mold exclusions, endorsements and limits. A covered water loss does not automatically establish coverage for mold remediation. Check your declarations page for any mold limit.
Will it come back?
Not if the moisture source is fixed - that's why remediation includes finding it, not just removing what you can see.
